The Chelsea home shirt has always been blue, although the club's first kit used a lighter blue colour than today and wore white trousers and black socks. The light blue was taken from the shirt of the then Viscount Chelsea. The colour of these shirts was changed around 1912 to a new version that included a precious blue colour. In the 1960s Tommy Docherty changed the uniform again, adding blue trousers and still following white socks today.

The traditional colours of the club's alternate kit were yellow or white on the kit, but like many teams it was available in some very unusual colours. The first alternate uniforms consisted of blue and white stripes, and in the 1960s the team wore blue and black striped Inter Milan style uniforms for matches, against Docherty's orders. Other memorable uniforms include the green uniforms used in the 1980s and the red and white checks of the early 1990s.
